Visa Sponsorship J1

Westchester Medical Center sponsors J-1 visas. The J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa is the most common visa used by international physicians participating in accredited U.S. residency and fellowship training programs. For physicians in clinical graduate medical education, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), through its Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program (EVSP), serves as the sole designated J-1 visa sponsor.

Applicants seeking J-1 sponsorship generally must:

  • Obtain a position in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program.
  • Meet ECFMG certification requirements, when applicable.
  • Successfully complete the required USMLE examinations.
  • Provide a valid Statement of Need from the Ministry of Health (or appropriate government authority) of their country of citizenship or most recent legal permanent residence.
  • Meet all ECFMG and U.S. Department of State eligibility requirements for J-1 sponsorship.

Visa Sponsorship H1B

Westchester Medical Center does not sponsor H1B physician trainees requiring J-1 visas or other employment-based visas for residency or fellowship training, except in rare and exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and Chief Clinical Officer (CCO).  Requests for such rare and exceptional consideration must be submitted by the Program Director to the DIO.  Program candidates should clarify any necessary information regarding visa sponsorship with the applicable Program Director prior to program ranking or offer acceptance.
