Need an Orthopedist? Why Not See a PA?

What is an orthopedic PA?

Physician assistants, or PAs, are licensed healthcare providers trained to care for patients in many different areas of medicine. PAs can diagnose and treat illnesses like doctors do, but they work as part of a team under a doctor’s supervision.

In orthopedic care, PAs perform many of the same duties as the orthopedist, such as:

  • Taking your medical history, including past injuries and surgeries
  • Conducting a physical to evaluate your symptoms
  • Ordering diagnostic tests like X-rays and MRIs
  • Reviewing test results and diagnosing your issue
  • Prescribing medication like pain relievers and anti-inflammatories
  • Performing in-office procedures like joint injections

Orthopedic PAs work with orthopedic surgeons to develop personalized treatment plans. If surgery is needed, they often assist in the operating room and monitor your recovery afterwards.

More efficiency and consistency

While physicians undergo more extensive medical education, PA training is designed to emphasize a more patient-centered approach. PAs are usually involved in your care from the first visit through diagnosis, treatment, surgery (if needed) and recovery. This ongoing involvement helps you build a strong relationship with a consistent provider who understands your unique case, helping you feel more informed and in control every step of the way.

Even PAs who work in specialties like orthopedics are trained to care for the whole patient and not just your immediate symptoms. This broader approach means they can tailor your treatment plan to better fit your life and support your overall well-being. Moreover, because appointments with PAs are typically easier to schedule, you get the care you need without unnecessary delays.
