What an Extravascular ICD Means for Patients

If you’re at risk for a dangerous heart rhythm, your doctor may recommend an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). These devices can help treat sudden cardiac arrest by monitoring your heart and providing treatment when needed.

A newer type of ICD, called an extravascular ICD (EV-ICD), offers the same lifesaving protection while keeping the device’s lead outside the heart and blood vessels.

How Is an EV-ICD Different?

Traditional ICDs use a thin wire, called a lead, that travels through a blood vessel and into the heart.

With an EV-ICD, the lead is placed outside the heart and blood vessels, just beneath the breastbone. Because the lead stays outside the bloodstream, it may help lower the risk of some long-term problems like infection. Additionally, if there is an issue with the wires, they are easier to remove.

What Does the Device Do?

Like all ICDs, an EV-ICD continuously monitors the heart’s rhythm.

If a dangerous rhythm is detected, the device can deliver a shock to help restore a normal heartbeat which saves lives.

The EV-ICD can also use small electrical signals to stop certain fast heart rhythms before a shock is needed. This feature uses small electricals signals to stop some fast heart rhythms and may help patients avoid receiving a shock altogether.

What Are the Benefits of an EV-ICD?

An EV-ICD may offer several advantages, including:

  • Protection against life-threatening heart rhythms and sudden cardiac arrest
  • A lead that stays outside the heart and blood vessels
  • Treatment options that may reduce the need for shocks
  • A smaller device that is placed under the arm and may be less noticeable
  • A battery that can last more than 10 years for many patients

Is an EV-ICD Right for Everyone?

No. The best device depends on each person’s heart condition, medical history and treatment needs.
