Breast cancer awareness is often symbolized by pink ribbons, but what really saves lives is early detection. Finding breast cancer at its earliest stage means treatment can begin sooner, when it’s most effective. That’s why understanding screenings and knowing the signs to look for are critical for women and men alike.
Mammograms: The Gold Standard
For women at average risk, the American Cancer Society recommends starting annual mammograms at age 40. Do you have a family history, BRCA mutations or other red flags? Your screening timeline might need to start even earlier. The bottom line: Have this conversation with your doctor now, not later.
What You Might Not Know
- Men can get breast cancer too: Though rare, about 1 in 100 breast cancer cases in the U.S. are found in men. Men should seek care if they notice a lump, nipple changes or unusual discharge.
- It’s not always a lump: Early warning signs can include skin dimpling, persistent redness, thickening or changes around the nipple.
- Dense breast tissue matters: Nearly half of women over 40 have dense breast tissue, which increases cancer risk and can make traditional mammograms less effective at spotting abnormalities. Advanced 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) significantly improves detection in dense breasts, while MRI may be recommended for high-risk women.
- Family history isn’t the only risk: Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no close relatives with the disease. Lifestyle factors like alcohol use, obesity and inactivity also play a role.
- Self-awareness saves lives: While self-exams are no longer formally recommended as a screening tool, being familiar with the look and feel of your breasts helps you notice changes that should be checked by a doctor.
