Pediatric Radiology

Pediatric radiologists at WMCHealth’s Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital play a crucial role in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating children.

The images, produced through a variety of techniques, are sometimes the first look we have at what’s going on beneath the surface for a range of conditions that affect children. We use those images to decide how best to help the tiniest patients in our care.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital radiologists aim to provide a comforting and unique experience for kids who need radiology procedures. With the help of child life specialists and technology that’s specially designed to provide a calming experience, our staff and facility are renowned in the region.

We know a child experiencing discomfort can feel added stress in a traditional hospital environment. That’s why we have taken the time to develop a space unique to children and young adults.

Child life specialists are healthcare professionals specially trained to help children and their families cope with healthcare experiences. The child life specialists at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital are dedicated to reducing anxiety related to medical procedures. Our specialists can also be present during imaging procedures to provide distraction and relaxation techniques.

Pediatric Radiology Services and Technology We Use

Our board-certified pediatric radiologists ensure the newest techniques and protocols are followed to obtain diagnostic imaging, adhering to the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principles at all times. Among our radiological services are:

X-ray

Traditional X-rays use lower doses of radiation to locate problems in the bones and joints including breaks and fractures.

Fluoroscopy

This fluoroscopy technology is the most advanced available offering the newest imaging techniques producing high-quality images with the lowest radiation dose. Our fluoroscopy suite uses the Philips Ambient Experience with dynamic lighting, visual displays, and sound to comfort children during exams. This helps relieve the stress commonly associated with medical exams.

Ultrasound

Ultrasounds use sound waves to look at the shape and structure of different parts of the body. We use ultrasound to identify the source of pain or swelling amongst many other conditions.

Computed Tomography (CT)

A CT scan may be recommended to identify vascular, lung  and heart diseases and traumatic injuries to the brain and bone. CT imaging can also be used to guide doctors performing biopsies.

PET scan

A PET scan is a complicated test in which radiologists utilize radiotracers to detect organ and tissue function throughout the body as well as early signs of cancer.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRIs provide physicians with 3D pictures of soft tissues of the body, such as internal organs. MRI images have been used to guide our cardiac and neurosurgeons to perform the most advanced surgeries.
