Why Choose Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital?
Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center with a fully equipped Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, and inpatient pediatrics services where we see complicated and highly serious cases every day.
Our team of neurologists plays an active role in patient care, teaching, and research. We work together with neurosurgery, neuroradiology, the pediatric and neonatal ICU, and researchers at New York Medical College interested in pediatric epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.
Our highly skilled doctors are active members of local and national organizations such as the Child Neurology Society, the American Epilepsy Society, and the American Academy of Neurology.
The Neonatal ICU at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is a Level 4 Regional NICU (RNICU) with a neurologist dedicated to neonatal neurology.
With a dedicated pediatric neurology hospitalist on staff, we provide a quick response to concussions, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, and status epilepticus. Pediatric stroke is a relatively new field, and our doctors are experienced in both IV and intra-arterial tPA, providing the most effective treatment when time matters most.
Pediatric Neurological Treatments and Programs
Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital offers a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric neurological conditions. The pediatric specialists in neuro-oncology, neuropsychology, neurosurgery, pediatric anesthesia, intensive care, and nursing provide all-encompassing care for children.
Our neurosurgical team uses the most advanced techniques, including frameless stereotaxy, endoscopy, and laser embolization, as part of several programs within neurosurgery. These programs include:
Pediatric Craniofacial
Children with head shape or structure concerns will be seen by a team that includes both a pediatric neurosurgeon and a plastic surgeon.
Pediatric Neuro-oncology
Children with benign and malignant tumors of the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves are supported by our highly trained specialists in the neuro-oncology team. Treatments may include chemotherapy and radiation based on the tumor type and the child’s age.
Pediatric Peripheral Nerve
When children experience pain, weakness, or tremors outside the brain or spinal cord, our pediatric peripheral nerve specialists provide a treatment plan to regain nerve function.
Pediatric Vascular and Endovascular
Our teams provide advanced care for arteriovenous malformations, fistulas, aneurysms, and moyamoya.
Pediatric Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Disorders
We treat all conditions related to abnormalities in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, including hydrocephalus.
Epilepsy and Seizure Treatment
Often, a regimen of medication and monitoring is needed for children with epilepsy. However, if medications don’t control the seizures, surgery may be an option. We work closely with the Neurophysiology Lab to provide inpatient and outpatient EEG evaluation of seizures. Our dedicated epilepsy monitoring beds provide comfort to patients with seizures. All beds in the Pediatric ICU and many beds in the Neonatal ICU are hard-wired for continuous EEG monitoring. We have experience with grid placement as part of the pre-surgical evaluation for epilepsy surgery.
