On behalf of the Faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology of Westchester Medical Center, we welcome you to the candidate evaluation process and to learn about our Department, its goals and mission for education and training. At WMCHealth, we endeavor to provide a learning environment where you can obtain the experience, knowledge and skills required to become an outstanding Otolaryngologist. This requires extraordinary dedication and effort on the part of our residents. In return, our Department strives to create a learning environment that promotes accessibility, communication and collaboration among all of its members.

Although our program has only recently been accredited for training, we have been educating Otolaryngology Residents at WMCHealth for more than 25 years as a training site for the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and more recently the Mount Sinai Residency programs.

WMCHealth is the home of the only tertiary care hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center and Children’s Hospital in the Hudson Valley. Our trainees at WMCHealth are exposed to a broad clinical experience. Upon completion of their residency, we expect our graduates to be equipped with the skills necessary to be outstanding general Otolaryngologists or as Fellows enrolled in a subspecialty training program.

Once again, welcome to the recruitment process. I look forward to sharing further information about our program with you.

Program Overview

The Westchester Medical Center (WMCHealth) Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery Residency Program is committed to providing a comprehensive, patient-centered educational experience that prepares residents to become exceptional clinicians, surgeons, and future leaders in the field of otolaryngology. The program’s mission is to cultivate a collaborative learning environment that emphasizes clinical excellence, professionalism, scholarly activity, and compassionate care. Based at the Hudson Valley’s only tertiary-care referral center, Level I Trauma Center, and Children’s Hospital, residents gain exposure to a diverse and complex patient population across the full spectrum of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. The curriculum is enhanced through a robust academic program that includes Grand Rounds, Resident Report, and a structured Resident Lecture Series, providing opportunities for case-based learning, evidence-based discussions, and faculty-led education. Residents also participate in simulation training, which strengthens surgical skills, clinical decision-making, teamwork, and patient safety in a controlled learning environment. Through strong faculty mentorship, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to lifelong learning, the program prepares graduates for successful careers in both general otolaryngology practice and advanced fellowship training.

Program Mission

The goal of the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program is to provide excellent training in all facets of the field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (O- HNS) and to develop autonomous O-HNS specialists. The O-HNS Department at Westchester Medical Center serves a diverse population of three million residents in the Hudson Valley Region with state-of-the-art in-patient and ambulatory support services and dedicated staff. A large clinical in-patient and operative volume and active ambulatory sites afford our trainees the opportunity to develop medical knowledge, requisite diagnostic and surgical skills as well as critical thinking, professionalism, and communication skills. Our Residency aims to create a collegial and supportive teaching environment with the goal of training autonomous O-HNS practitioners with the capacity to pursue an academic career or work in a community practice. This objective is achieved with the help of extremely dedicated and highly trained faculty that have a well-developed camaraderie with all medical professionals at all levels and a staff that maintains daily focus on professionalism, communication, compassion, reliability, initiative, and responsibility of the trainee. In collaboration with our Basic Science colleagues at New York Medical College, O-HNS will participate in clinical and bench research experiences. Our goal is to develop each resident’s critical understanding of medical literature through scholastic engagement. During their training, O-HNS Residents will interact with medical students and residents of all specialties to develop teaching and mentoring skills with the guidance of faculty. The overarching objective of the O-HNS Program at Westchester Medical Center is multifaceted learning throughout training that instills in the trainees a commitment to providing high quality, contemporary, compassionate care as a lifelong learner I the discipline of O-HNS.

American Board of Otolaryngology ABOHNS Resident Registry

The WMC Otolaryngology Residency program is designed to prepare its graduates to sit for the certifying examination offered by the American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ABHONS). The ABHONS website (www.abohns.org) provides the requirements the residents must fulfill for certification.

Curriculum

Our Simulation Program offers a dynamic, experiential learning curriculum focused on developing knowledge, technical expertise, and clinical judgment essential to the practice of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. The curriculum features a four-year rotating schedule of simulation-based training sessions conducted throughout the academic year, covering a broad spectrum of otolaryngologic conditions, procedures, and emergency scenarios. By participating in realistic, hands-on simulations, residents refine their surgical skills, enhance team communication, and build confidence in managing complex patient care situations. As the field of Otolaryngology continues to advance, our program is regularly updated to incorporate emerging techniques and educational innovations, ensuring residents are well prepared for independent practice and lifelong learning.
