Pediatric pulmonology care at WMCHealth’s Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is part of the Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy, Immunology, and Sleep Medicine Division, one of the largest programs in the nation.

Our pediatric pulmonologists, allergists, and sleep specialists diagnose and care for more than 12,000 children each year with a range of respiratory problems, including asthma and bronchitis, and more complex pulmonary disorders like cystic fibrosis.

We know that you will breathe easier when your child does. At Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, expert clinical teams provide care in a facility with access to advanced technology and treatment capabilities right in your community. Our pulmonologists are active in clinical research and medical breakthroughs, particularly in asthma and cystic fibrosis treatments. Our desire to learn and improve is at the heart of what we do.

Pediatric Pulmonology Conditions We Treat

Our team of pulmonologists diagnose and provide expert care for several pediatric lung conditions, including:

  • Cystic fibrosis (CF): CF is a chronic disease that affects the sweat and mucus glands and causes trouble breathing and frequent lung infections. Treatment for CF is lifelong and, at times, requires acute care.
  • Asthma: Asthma is a chronic lung condition that causes the airways in the lungs to swell and narrow, causing wheezing and shortness of breath. When children with asthma are exposed to certain triggers, their airways swell and tighten. Our pulmonologists are skilled in providing children with asthma treatment plans that allow them to live normal and active lives.
  • Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a common lung infection that can cause fever, chills, coughing, and chest pain. Bacterial pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics, while viral pneumonia often gets better on its own. WMCHealth pediatric pulmonologists are trained in diagnosing pneumonia in children.
  • Bronchitis: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes that causes coughing and difficulty breathing. There are several types of bronchitis, but the most common type in children is acute bronchitis, requiring medication.
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia: can occur in premature babies whose lungs are not able to fully develop in the womb and require oxygen. They may continue to need treatment to prevent further damage to their lungs as they grow.
  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD): ILD is a group of rare lung diseases in which the lungs are damaged and may collect fluid.
  • Tuberculosis: Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that most often affects the lungs and can sometimes affect other parts of the body. TB is spread from person to person through the air when a person with TB disease coughs or sneezes.
