Pediatric Nephrology

Children with kidney conditions may not always experience obvious symptoms. Sometimes, kidney concerns are first identified through routine urine testing, blood pressure readings, blood work, or imaging.

At Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at WMCHealth, our pediatric nephrology team provides specialized kidney care for children with a wide range of kidney and urinary conditions. We offer advanced evaluation, long-term management, dialysis support, and kidney transplant coordination for infants, children, and adolescents across the Hudson Valley. Children who need a kidney transplant can also access specialized transplant care through one of the region’s only pediatric kidney transplant programs.

Our specialists work closely with pediatricians, hospital teams, and other pediatric subspecialists to help families better understand their child’s condition and next steps. Whether your child needs evaluation for a newly discovered concern or ongoing care for kidney disease, our team is here to help.

Pediatric Diagnostics

Many pediatric kidney conditions are identified through routine testing before symptoms become severe. Early kidney evaluation can help clarify the cause of abnormal findings and guide treatment decisions. Diagnostic services may include:

  • Genetic testing
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Urine testing and blood work
  • Advanced imaging technologies
  • Kidney and bladder ultrasound imaging
  • Sedation-supported kidney biopsy procedures
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)

Genetic Testing for Inherited Kidney Disorders

Genetic testing now plays an important role in pediatric kidney care. In some cases, it may help establish a diagnosis while reducing the need for more invasive procedures, such as a kidney biopsy. Results can also help guide treatment decisions and identify when additional evaluations or long-term monitoring may benefit your child.

Our Approach to Pediatric Nephrology

We understand how kidney disease can affect many aspects of your child’s health and development. That’s why our team works closely with families to provide coordinated care that supports both immediate needs and long-term wellness.

Collaborative Pediatric Care

Pediatric nephrologists at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital frequently collaborate with specialists across WMCHealth, including pediatric urology, genetics, rheumatology, neurology, intensive care teams, neonatology and transplant surgery. Children with complex conditions benefit from shared expertise and coordinated treatment planning.

Long-Term Kidney Care and Support

Some pediatric kidney conditions require continued care throughout childhood and adolescence. Our team helps families manage chronic kidney disease, dialysis care, hypertension, and transplant follow-up while supporting each child’s growth and development. As children get older, we also help support a smooth transition into adult nephrology care.

Our team participates in clinical research focused on pediatric kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, IgA nephropathy, hypertension, genetic kidney disorders, and kidney transplantation. This work helps improve understanding of complex kidney conditions and advance pediatric kidney care throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond.

Families at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital may have access to emerging therapies and evolving diagnostic approaches. Our care is informed by ongoing pediatric nephrology research and evidence-based treatment strategies.
