WMCHealth Orthopedics uses EOSedge® imaging to help your care team better understand your condition and guide your care. This imaging system captures detailed images while you are standing , allowing your doctor to evaluate spinal and lower extremity alignment under natural weight-bearing conditions.
These insights may help guide surgical preparation, long-term monitoring, and post-surgical evaluation. EOSedge imaging may also help reduce radiation exposure by up to 90% as compared to many conventional imaging methods.
What Is the EOSedge?
EOSedge imaging captures detailed X-rays of your spine, hips, and legs while you remain upright. Unlike traditional imaging performed while lying down, EOSedge imaging allows your doctor to evaluate posture, spinal balance, and skeletal alignment.
The EOSedge produces simultaneous 2D and 3D images in a single scan, reducing the need for repeat imaging.
Advanced Orthopedic Care
WMCHealth offers Westchester County’s only EOSedge imaging system designed for pediatric and adult patients. At WMCHealth and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, orthopedic specialists treat a wide range of bone, joint, and spine conditions, including scoliosis, hip disorders, fractures, and complex musculoskeletal conditions. Your care team works together to support accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing orthopedic care.
Is EOSedge Right for Me?
The EOSedge features an open-frame design that can accommodate patients of different heights and body types. Your doctor may recommend EOSedge imaging if:
- You can stand still without assistance.
- Your or your child’s doctor needs detailed imaging to support surgical planning or ongoing orthopedic care.
- You or your child may need repeated imaging over time for conditions such as scoliosis or leg-length inequality.
Radiation Protection
At WMCHealth, limiting unnecessary radiation exposure is an important part of your care. The EOSedge imaging system follows As Low As Diagnostically Acceptable (ALADA) principles and uses significantly lower radiation doses than CT scans and many conventional X-rays.
This may be especially important for children and adolescents who require repeated imaging over time, including patients being monitored for scoliosis during growth.
What to Expect During an EOSedge Full Scan
Before your EOSedge scan, you may be asked to change into a paper apron or cloth gown. Because the scan uses low-dose radiation, you likely will not need to wear a protective lead apron.
During an EOSedge full scan, you will stand or sit up straight inside an open-frame cabin. The motorized platform will ensure you are in the proper position. One vertical and one horizontal X-ray beam will scan your entire body in both directions and produce images for your doctor. The entire process is about 20 seconds.
Unlike conventional X-ray imaging, you won’t likely need to be repositioned for additional scans, as the two simultaneous scans provide all necessary imaging in one pass. Because the EOSedge full scan is performed while you’re upright, your doctor can observe how the weight of gravity affects your body. This means your care plan will focus on improving your practical, day-to-day movement.
