A cardiac MRI can provide a more detailed image of your heart when other scans don’t show enough detail. If you experience chest pain or shortness of breath, this scan can help pinpoint the potential cause, such as arrhythmias or heart muscle damage.
At WMCHealth, we combine the region’s most advanced cardiac MRI capabilities with the region’s most experienced readers. We can identify structural problems and assess heart function as early as possible. This means you and your care team can take next steps sooner to support a healthier heart.
What to Know About Your Cardiac MRI
Here’s what you need to know about preparing for, experiencing, and recovering from a cardiac MRI.
How to Prepare
Follow these steps to prepare for your cardiac MRI:
- You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before your scan.
- Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing; jewelry, hairpins and watches should be left at home.
- Inform your provider if you have a pacemaker, implant, or metal inside your body.
- Let your team know if you experience claustrophobia; medication may be offered to help you relax.
What to Expect During the Cardiac MRI
Your cardiac MRI will take place in a dedicated imaging suite, overseen by a cardiac MRI technologist and interpreted by an advanced imager who specializes in cardiac imaging. The scan is painless and may take 30 to 90 minutes:
- You will lie on a flat table that slides into a tunnel-like scanner.
- ECG leads will be placed on your chest to track your heartbeat during the scan.
- A contrast dye may be injected through an IV to enhance image detail.
- You will need to remain still and follow simple breathing instructions.
What to Expect After
Most patients resume normal activities immediately following the MRI. Drinking water helps clear contrast dye from your system, if used.
- Your care team will review the results and explain any findings or next steps.
- Follow-up care may include additional tests or referral to a cardiologist within WMCHealth.
- Treatment plans are developed with input from your full care team.
