If you’re experiencing chest pain, palpitations, or dizziness, your doctor may order an electrocardiogram. An electrocardiogram (also called an ECG or EKG) is a quick, noninvasive test that can help identify a wide range of heart conditions. Conditions may include heart arrythmia (irregular heartbeats) and coronary artery disease (narrowed or blocked heart arteries that reduce blood flow).
At Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), we offer ECG testing as a standard part of cardiac evaluation. We use the latest tools and technology to make sure your results are fast, clear, and reliable. This gives us a clearer picture of how your heart is working, so we can help you choose a treatment plan that fits you best.
What is an ECG?
An ECG checks the electrical activity of your heart’s electrical activity using electrodes (small sticky pads) placed on your chest, arms, and legs. It shows how fast your heart is beating, if the rhythm is steady, and if your heart has any damage.
Your doctor may suggest an ECG to:
- Keep track of a heart problem you already have.
- See how well your heart medicine or device is working.
- Find out what’s causing chest pain, fainting, or trouble breathing.
What to Know About Your ECG
Knowing what to expect before, during, and after your ECG can help you prepare for a smooth appointment.
How to Prepare for an ECG
- Wear a loose-fitting, two-piece outfit, if possible. This will help your echocardiographer, who will perform the test, easily place electrodes on the needed areas of your body.
- Don’t use lotion or oil on your skin the day of the test. They can make it harder for the electrodes to stay on.
What to Expect During the ECG
This test doesn’t hurt and usually takes less than 10 minutes. Your echocardiographer will:
- Place small electrodes (sticky patches) on your chest, arms, and legs.
- These patches connect to a machine that records how your heart is working.
- You’ll lie still and breathe normally while the machine records.
What to Expect Afterwards
After your ECG, you can go back to your normal activities right away. A heart doctor will check your results and let you know if you need any follow-up care.
Pediatric Cardiology: Advanced Imaging for Growing Hearts
WMCHealth offers ECG testing and other advanced imaging techniques to support children’s heart health. These tools give parents clear information to better understand their child’s condition.
