Diagnosing Nasal Conditions
To diagnose your condition, your doctor will start by reviewing your medical history and current symptoms. If your issue is ongoing, or if your doctor thinks you may have a nasal disorder, you may be referred to an ENT.
An ENT will usually perform a head and neck exam. They may use a thin, flexible scope (endoscope) to look inside your nasal cavity. If they see a polyp or mass, they may take a small sample for testing.
If further evaluation is needed, you may also have a CT scan. These images can show inflammation, blockages, or structural problems that may not be visible during a physical exam.
Causes of Nasal Conditions
Nasal conditions can be caused by a variety of factors such as:
- Bacteria or viruses
- Structural deformity
- Long-term inflammation
- Other underlying medical conditions
- Environmental irritants such as smoke, dust, or perfume
