If you are experiencing pain or limited range of motion due to an injury or health condition, the physical therapists at WMCHealth can help. Our physical therapy team offers a comprehensive program of services for both children and adults. Through the latest available techniques and approaches, our goal is to restore your optimal function and independence.

What Is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a field of care that aims to improve your mobility and quality of life while working to prevent future injuries or disabilities. It can also help decrease pain and improve function. At WMCHealth, we offer physical therapy in a variety of settings and programs that range from intensive inpatient therapy to outpatient periodic therapy sessions. Many times, physical therapy can feel like exercise. A physical therapist will help you learn movements to get stronger, and you can often practice your treatments at home. Physical therapy may include:

  • Exercises
  • Stretches
  • Massages
  • Heat therapy
  • Bracing/taping
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Patient education about at-home exercises and self-management

When is Physical Therapy Needed?

If you have had an accident, a sports injury, or a severe health event like a stroke, you may need help regaining functionality in various areas of your body. You may also have a health condition for which physical therapy could help you maintain or regain strength and mobility. Your doctor will prescribe physical therapy if they recommend it as part of your treatment.

The physical therapy center at WMCHealth can help with symptoms you may have due to a wide range of injuries and disorders, including:

The three most common types of physical therapy are:

  • Geriatric physical therapy: Focuses on older adults who may have arthritis or osteoporosis
  • Orthopedic physical therapy: Treats musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains or tendon issues
  • Neurological physical therapy: Helps to increase limb responsiveness and promote balance for those suffering from stroke or Parkinson’s disease

What to Expect in Physical Therapy

At WMCHealth, we pride ourselves on providing excellent physical therapy and rehabilitation in a friendly and caring environment. Treatment is done on a one-on-one basis, so we can provide you with our full attention and answer all your questions regarding your therapy and rehabilitation process.

We work collaboratively with your doctor and other members of your care team to create an individualized care plan that sets your specific goals.

Patients recovering from severe conditions such as stroke will likely need acute inpatient therapy, while a patient recovering from a sprain may see a physical therapist two to three times a week and have instruction for a home exercise program to get them to their goals.

For some, physical therapy is challenging. It takes hard work and patience to strengthen muscles and relearn skills. This is why the physical therapists at WMCHealth treat you as a whole person and tailor a care plan to you. We are sensitive to your emotional and psychological needs. We are here to help you overcome any challenges you may face and work to aid you in achieving your ultimate goal of a lasting recovery.
