Clinical Pastoral Education – Westchester Medical Center Health Network

As a teaching hospital with a diverse register of medical specialties, WMC offers medical residency programs for as many as 340 physicians seeking specialty training. The New York Medical College offers a setting rich in opportunities for learning, providing training for skilled professionals in all medical specialties, technologies, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, radiology, respiratory care, and public administration.

The integrated approach to holistic patient care offers learners opportunities to tap into a network of interdisciplinary care-giving alliances. Program Information

CPE Resident Program

A 12-month, three-unit, Chaplain Residency begins the second week of September

Application deadline: Six months prior to anticipated start date
Average of 13 hours per week for group seminars, individual supervision and education
40-hour commitment per week, including day, evening and weekend on-call responsibilities during the unit
$45,977 stipend with benefits

A theological degree, Certificate, or other documentation of Biblical/religious studies, depending on the requirements of the denomination or faith group of the applicant to be considered an equivalency of a M.Div. degree. At minimum, there must be an equivalent of 60 hours toward a M.Div. degree.
Evidence of faith group approval/endorsement for CPE training.
In the case of an applicant with a foreign degree, an equivalency of that degree must be ascertained by one of the equivalency organizations given out by the Human Resources Department.
Minimum of 1-2 years prior ministry experience preferred.
Completion of one prior unit of CPE.
A commitment to the clinical method of learning.
Emotional stability and maturity, allowing the student to enter into the in-depth process of the learning experience.
Adequate intellectual, emotional/tempera-mental, and spiritual ability to perform pastoral care. Physical ability and stamina to navigate in a large campus.
Demonstrated openness and commitment to the learning process as it relates to the field of spiritual care and multi-faith ministry including the ability to identify learning goals.
Three letters of reference stating the applicant’s suitability to offering spiritual care in a multi-faith, chaotic, at times crisis oriented environment.

CPE Part-Time Internship Program

A 30-week internship begins the second week of September and ends the second week of April.

Application deadline: Two months prior to anticipated start date
4 hours per week for group supervision
10 hours of clinical service per week, day
A total of 14 hours per week (minimum)

Some theological study, at minimum, there must be some documented leadership in the applicant’s faith group, and evidence of faith group approval/endorsement for CPE training.
One year prior ministry experience preferred or interdisciplinary experience in healthcare.
Completion of one prior unit of CPE, preferred.
Openness to the action-reflection model of learning.
Emotional stability and maturity, allowing the student to enter into the in-depth process of the learning experience.
Adequate intellectual, emotional/tempera-mental, and spiritual ability to perform pastoral care. Physical ability and stamina to navigate in a large campus.
Demonstrated openness and commitment to the learning process as it relates to the field of spiritual care and multi-faith ministry in a diverse setting, including the ability to identify learning goals.
