Taking preventive health measures is an important part of maintaining your overall health. At WMCHealth, we know the value of prevention and early detection. That’s why we provide a wide range of women’s health screenings. These tests can help doctors identify problems before they become complex issues. While these screenings may seem unnecessary, especially if you are asymptomatic, they can be life-saving. Many of them, including women’s cancer screenings, take only a few minutes. WMCHealth locations across New York provide these important health screenings for women.

Pap Smears

A pap smear is a simple procedure where cells are collected from the cervix to test for cervical cancer and other conditions. A pap test can also detect changes in the cells that indicate cancer may develop in the future. Early detection allows a greater chance for a cure.

Generally, a pap smear is done every three years from age 21 to 65. If you have certain risk factors, your doctor may want to perform the test more frequently.

STI Screenings

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are spread through sexual activity. If they are left untreated, they can cause long-term health problems. You may also risk spreading these conditions to any sexual partners. These infections do not always cause symptoms, so even if you and your partner seem healthy, you should consider getting tested.

WMCHealth offers a wide range of tests and can provide comprehensive treatment. There is no reason to feel embarrassed or ashamed of a positive test. Millions of people have been diagnosed with STIs, and our care teams are here to get you the treatment you need with compassion and expertise.

Osteoporosis Screening

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become brittle and weak. This increases the risk of fractures, which can ultimately lead to other disabilities. Osteoporosis is four times as common in women than men.

An osteoporosis screening can help detect the condition early, giving you time to make lifestyle changes that can help slow the progression and prevent falls.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world, and it’s highly treatable when caught early. That’s why breast cancer screenings, called mammograms, are so important. If you are at average risk, the American Cancer Society recommends women get yearly mammograms starting at age 45. If you are at high risk, you should start screenings around age 30.

WMCHealth offers women’s cancer screenings using the most advanced technologies in breast imaging, including advanced 3D mammography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided breast biopsy. The early detection five-year survival rate is approximately 99%.

Routine Gynecological Exams

A yearly gynecological exam includes a pelvic and breast exam and may also include a pap smear. These tests allow your doctor to check for signs of any health issues. They can help you decide what other women’s preventive screenings you should consider based on your age and current health.

Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Checks

Approximately 60 million women in the US have some form of heart disease, and it is the leading cause of death in women. Routine checks of your cholesterol and blood pressure are vital to overall good health.

If your doctor does detect a problem, you may be referred to another doctor or specialist for the best possible care and treatment.
