Abdominal Surgery

Common abdominal surgeries for children include appendectomy, hernia repair, or gastrostomy tube placement. Surgery can also be used to treat nutritional and metabolic disorders.

Cardiac Surgery

We treat many heart conditions for children in the earliest stages of life through young adulthood with cardiac surgery. Our heart surgeons are experts in many techniques, including a minimally invasive right axillary thoracotomy, which allows the surgeon to repair the heart through a small muscle-sparing incision under the arm. Only a handful of surgeons in the country perform this advanced approach.

Neonatal Surgery

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital’s neonatal surgery team treats a wide range of concerns for our smallest patients in the NICU, including congenital malformations, gastroschisis, biliary atresia, Choledochal cysts, and diaphragmatic hernias. We are also the only hospital in the Hudson Valley to offer an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program for newborns who need advanced heart and lung support.

Oncologic Surgery

In addition to performing central line placement to facilitate long-term access for chemotherapy and other treatments, our specialized team of skilled oncological surgeons are experienced in treating hemangiomas, vascular and lymphatic malformations, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, sarcomas, and many other types of tumors with great success.

Gynecological and Urological Surgery

Children from infancy through young adulthood may require care from our specialist for circumcision, undescended testicles, or ovarian tumors and cysts.

Head and Neck Procedures

We specialize in branchial cleft cyst/fistula excision, thyroglossal duct cyst resection, and lymph node biopsy.

Neurosurgery

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital surgeons treat the full spectrum of pediatric neurosurgical disorders and use the most advanced techniques, such as frameless stereotaxy, endoscopy, and laser ablation.

Reconstructive/Plastic Surgery

From routine laceration repair to complex craniofacial reconstruction (reshaping infant skulls), and even separating conjoined twins, the plastic surgeons at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital work with advanced technology in reconstructive/plastic surgery to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgery can include operations in the child’s chest, heart and lungs, esophagus, or trachea. We treat many conditions, including chest wall deformities, esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula, congenital diaphragmatic hernias, lung malformations, as well as resections of chest masses, foregut duplications, and thymoma.

Traumatic Injury Care

Our Level 1 Trauma Center is equipped to handle countless pediatric traumatic injuries. Our multispecialty pediatric trauma surgeons provide timely, lifesaving care, supported by advanced emergency room and critical care teams. We provide expert pediatric wound care to promote healing and recovery.

Child Life services focus on supporting children and families during traumatic and complex healthcare challenges. Specialists explain procedures in clear, child-friendly ways. They also provide emotional support that encourages confidence and coping.

Our surgeons use robotic systems when they may benefit a child’s procedure. Robotic tools can offer greater precision and smaller incisions. This helps support faster healing and less discomfort after surgery.
