During one’s pregnancy journey, it is crucial to consume foods and beverages that may enhance the growth of the fetus and provide overall benefits to the well-being of the pregnancy. A diet centered on fruits and vegetables, provides immense nutritional value to both mom and baby, and deters risk elevation of the pregnancy. With the addition of daily prenatal vitamins, fruits and vegetables provide nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are essential to the growth and development of the newborn.

We advise daily servings of fruits and vegetables balanced with lean proteins to maximize the development of all organ systems and gradual growth over the course of the pregnancy. Furthermore, an increase intake of fluids, especially water enables the body to be well hydrated and reduce the risk of preterm contractions and labor. Using the food guide pyramid designed by the US Department of agriculture, meal preparation can be helpful in designing balanced meals throughout the day with the addition of healthy snack options for hunger management.

Sugar rich foods and high sugar concentrated drinks should be avoided during pregnancy. Both can increase one’s risk of gestational diabetes and abnormal fetal growth and development. We also advised decreased consumption of processed fast-food options and replacement with healthy meal options that include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and nuts. Although this may be a cumbersome task during pregnancy, aligning your pregnancy with a healthy diet and daily intake of prenatal vitamins can help prevent gestational diabetes, fetal anomalies and promote wellness while navigating their pregnancy course.
